One of my clients, who’s name I will not mention, received a visit from a Microsoft technical delegation. Their objective for that day was to convince my client to migrate from IBM to Microsoft. Too bad for Microsoft, my client was absolutely not planning to migrate simply because they do not want Exchange servers due to their poor security. Believe me, my client has done their research.

What really strikes me are the arguments they used to convince my client:

  • IBM is also using Outlook, so that sends a signal to the world.
  • The Netherlands only have 3 IBM Notes customers and you are one of them.

I had to process this, breathe and blink a few times. None of this is true. IBM is on the “Bring You Own Client” roadmap with Outlook, but not backed up with an Exchange server. ISMSO is the ability to connect your Outlook Client to a stable and fast IBM Domino server. There are a few, known Limitations but this becomes less an issue so long as the product continues to grow.

After contacting IBM it appears that a portion of the Global Business Services, the Consulting Division, in fact uses Outlook. But only for supporting Microsoft clients. No more, no less.
Microsoft is correct when it says that IBM is using Outlook but only for one small division. This does not apply to the rest of IBM. In fact, Microsoft didn’t lie but what they told the client is far from the truth.
And the so called fact that the Netherlands only have 3 clients is not probable. In my network, I know of 25. Five of which are Enterprise worthy.
This is typical Microsoft marketing. Blowing everything out of proportion to win clients. It’s too bad that IBM is too honest to do the same.
